Moon over Stones of Stennes
Orkney, Scotland

Unframed archival pigment print

When the moonlight shines down on the Stones of Stenness it’s no wonder people have been drawn to this place for 5,000 years. Five of the original twelve (or so) stones still stand but the henge (surrounding ditch) is gone.  This stone circle is thought to be the oldest in the British Isles. (Very possibly this is where the Stonehenge folk got the idea.) Nearby the Watchstone is only a couple of hundred yards away, about the same distance as the Barnhouse settlement to the north. One can imagine folk bringing the bones of their ancestors here before taking them on to Maeshowe tomb less than a mile further on. Sit here for a while and the Moon can conjure magic.
